Brooklynite Dan Shuman began practicing yoga in 2004, and teaching in 2009. He completed the Teacher Training Program in 2015 and became certified at Intro I/II in September 2016. Dan joined the faculty in 2017.
In 2019, Dan spent a month at Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India. There he studied intensively with Abhijata Iyengar, Raya Uma Datta, and many other institute teachers. “My trip to Pune was eye-opening in terms of seeing the breadth of the practice, and the vast array of personal interpretations of the method were out there. It just seemed so huge.”
An accomplished musician, Dan holds a B.A. in Jazz Studies in Performance from William Paterson College. His work as a bassist, composer, and arranger has been featured on more than 40 recordings; Dan has performed both domestically and abroad with jazz artists, metal bands, songwriters, folk groups, musical theater, and more.
Dan’s teaching style is characterized by friendliness and precision, and an emphasis on personal adaptation. His approach is informed by the study of anatomy and kinesiology, as well as his zeal and enthusiasm for practice. “I hope it’s contagious,” he says.
