Carolyn Christie-Irvine began studying Iyengar Yoga in 1989 at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco. When she moved to New York in 1993 she continued her studies at the NY Institute and began teacher training with Mary Dunn. Carolyn joined the faculty in 1995 and has a Level 3 certification. She has studied extensively with Gabriella Giubilaro and Patricia Walden. Her first trip to RIYMI in Pune was in 1996, and she has returned dozen times to study with the teachers there and with Firooza Razvi.
In college, Carolyn majored in art and art history. Post graduation, she served in the Peace Corps 1987-89, teaching English and supporting local agriculture projects in Thailand. While living in Thailand, Carolyn’s interest in Buddhism and yoga evolved into a determination to learn the philosophy and practice of both. She traveled to India in 1989 to visit the motherland of these practices. To this day Carolyn’s passion is yoga, art, and Buddhism.
Carolyn’s teaching style is inspired by BKS Iyengar’s statement that yoga is a science, an art and a philosophy. “Yoga philosophy,” says Guruji, “is straightforward, practical, and most important, applicable now.” Carolyn aspires to follow in the footsteps of all her teachers, but most especially Mary Dunn, who masterfully blended the art, science, and philosophy of yoga, never letting one override the other.
