Norma Colon

Norma has been teaching yoga for 47 years, in the Iyengar tradition since 1987. Having taught at many locations and companies for many years, Norma has been on the faculty at the Iyengar Institute since 2017. She has taught pregnant women both in class and privately and has taught the Women’s class on occasion over the years. Norma has been teaching Gentle Yoga classes at the Institute since 2000.

Outside of IYAGNY, Norma teaches special populations including the deaf and hard of hearing in collaboration with Hunter College, students with multiple sclerosis though the MS Society, and community classes in El Barrio and the South Bronx close to where she grew up. Norma has taught some of her private students for over 25 years.

Norma was introduced to Iyengar Yoga around 1979 when she attended a workshop with visiting teachers Karin Stephan and Patricia Walden where she had been taking classes.  She was blown away by the dynamic duo and the precise, intense method. Norma loves writing about Yoga and has published articles over the years, including “A Yoga Wake Up Call” in Latina magazine and on Jennifer Kagan’s teaching in ASL for Samachar.

Norma’s style of teaching is a synthesis of strong encouragement and nurturing support. She enjoys inspiring students to do more and better and to find time in their lives for more yoga. She delights in observing the students’ recognition of their progress with the asanas and the benefits they derive.

Norma is extremely thankful for the extraordinary blessing that Iyengar Yoga is in her life. She quotes BKS Iyengar, “The sun shines everywhere. It does not shine only here and there. In the same way yoga is for everyone.”
